Modern Atlanta Home Tour | 2015

The Courtyard House uses an L-shaped typology which allowed for the preservation of existing vegetation and the harvesting of natural daylight. The home's circulation frames the courtyard along its transparent edge, and remains consistent at each level. Overhangs along the courtyard glass are sized to take advantage of the site's southern exposure.

The circulation axes are punctuated at their intersection by a 3-storey stair. The stair wraps the kitchen and pulls warm air up through the center of the home and out through the operable clerestory. The fireplace is another organizing element, rising from the foundation through the cantilevered roof opening. In addition to the passive strategies used to heat and cool the home, a geothermal system provides air at stable temperatures for minimal heating and cooling.
