Originally Western Electric, the Telephone Factory Lofts building was constructed in 1938 and was renovated to host loft living in the 1990’s. The design for Generator considers how to convert the Beltline-adjacent basement space into a restaurant, bar, office, and event space in accordance with a historic façade easement. The design transcends disciplines by composing a cohesive landscape and interior design with architectural improvements. The project addressed the need for accessibility by adding a gently sloping ramp from the street to an existing Beltline landing (to be fully connected at a later phase)leading to Generator’s front door. The design added a public facing deck which fragments into slope-stabilizing Corten terracing, mimicking the abstracted topographical lines of the site survey. The design concept blends to the interior where a non-gendered public restroom recalls the recent past of the greenway in a kudzu tile mosaic with bright orange surfaces and utilitarian wall and floor tiles (rendered in a sketch by the client).
